More than 75 board members and superintendents attended Questar III’s annual meeting on April 5. The meeting was held to review the BOCES’ tentative budget in accordance with state law.

Questar III District Superintendent Dr. Gladys I. Cruz reviewed information on organization’s proposed administrative, and rent and capital budget for 2017-18.

The 22 component districts that make up Questar III will vote April 25 on the proposed $6.1 million administrative budget, which is an increase of 3.73 percent over the current year’s budget. This is the only budget school boards vote on each year.

Board President John Hill presented James Keegan with Questar III’s highest honor, the G. Lucius Cary Annual Service Leadership Award, for his four decades of volunteer service.

“Jim’s unselfish service and volunteer activities extend far beyond education and into the lives and affairs of his neighbors and his community. He is greatly respected by all who have had the opportunity to know and work with him,” said Hill.

Chairs of Questar III’s four superintendent subcommittees also provided updates on special education, career and technical education, school improvement and district services. Ultimately, these budgets will depend upon service requests from school districts.

Attendees also watched three videos that profiled Questar III’s career and technical education program, Catskill Academy building and Communications Service.

Culinary arts students were recognized for their efforts to make the meeting a success under the direction of Chefs Peter Desmond and Andrew Ottati. Students prepared and served a variety of hors d’oeuvres and desserts as part of their hands-on program.

In closing the meeting, Hill thanked those in attendance for their support of the BOCES.

“Your continued support and collaboration continues to expand educational opportunities for students in our region,” he said.
