On October 22, students and parents from all over the Capital Region had the opportunity to learn about careers in new and emerging technologies and how to prepare themselves for those careers.

The 2015 STEM Career Expo – held at Troy Middle School – played host to 20 exhibitors, and more than 150 attendees representing 17 schools.

Students in grades 7-11 were invited along with their parents to get an inside view of careers in fields involving science, technology, engineering, and math.

The Career Expo showed parents, students, educators, and community membersreal-life examples of how technology and science impact many industries, as well as offer opportunities to learn about future careers. Attendees also had the opportunity to participate in two panel discussions- one about careers in healthcare and another about careers in technology fields.

Questar III Career and Technical Education recruiter Pamela Mertz says events like this are important for students to help them learn the value of technology in the workplace.

“It is important to expose students as early as possible to careers that integrate technology in the workplace. It helps students understand how technology works and how advances in technology impact just about everything we do in the workplace,” said Mertz.

Associate Professor of Biology at Hudson Valley Community College Laurie Bradley says the key to being ready for a career in technology fields is to start thinking about it and planning early.

“I can’t emphasize how important the math is no matter what area of technology take any of the biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, anything now and take as much and as often as you possibly can.”

The event was presented by Questar III, the Rensselaer County Regional Chamber of Commerce, Center for Economic Growth, Troy City School District, and Schodack Central School District.

This year was the fourth year of the event, but was the first time Questar III partnered with CEG and the Chamber.
