Questar III BOCES and Capital Region BOCES have partnered with the Sage Colleges to launch the Theater Institute at Sage internship program (TIS), a new program that will provide high school seniors with hands-on experiences in theater performance and production.
The internship program, which will operate as a small pilot program during the fall and spring semesters of the 2012-13 school year, will initially serve a total of 10 high school seniors (5 students each semester).
TIS is an intensive half- year theater program located on the Russell Sage Campus in downtown Troy. The program hours are typically 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the school calendar with evening performances on some Fridays and matinees on Saturdays. The TIS staff includes college professors and theatre professionals, such as actors, set designers and arts administrators.
Students who participate in TIS will receive hands-on training in arts administration, technical theatre, educational theatre and performance. They will partake in both high school and college-level courses (including theatre classes and workshops.)
Peg Danner-Frank, teacher of the New Visions: Visual & Performing Arts program says participating in a TIS internship will allow students to gain valuable insight into the world of theatre.
“Students will be involved with the day-to-day activities of theatre professionals, ultimately gaining a sense of the demands and expectations of a career in theatre arts. The TIS Internship Program is consistent with BOCES’ vision for career and technical education,” said Danner-Frank.
Danner-Frank said the program model is very similar to the design of the former NYSTI program, but the program will be jointly operated by the BOCES and Sage.
An information session for interested students will be held at Schacht Fine Arts Center Theatre at Russell Sage College in Troy at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 23.
As a component of the interview process, students will be expected to perform a prepared monologue and/or song or submit a portfolio of technical theatre work for review.
Students can indicate their preference for the fall or spring semester when they apply.
The TIS internship program is designed so that students will spend one full semester at their home school and the other semester participating in TIS.
